The U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Argonne National Laboratory has announced a new strategic partnership with RIKEN, Fujitsu Limited, and NVIDIA, marking a significant step forward in the advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) and high-performance computing (HPC). Through a memorandum of understanding (MOU) signed on January 27, the four organizations will collaborate to accelerate scientific discovery by developing next-generation computing technologies and AI-driven research capabilities.

This newly signed agreement closely aligns with the DOE’s Genesis Mission, a national initiative designed to harness transformative AI to speed up discovery science, enhance national security, and foster innovation across the energy sector. By combining expertise from national laboratories, research institutions, and leading technology companies, the collaboration aims to unlock new possibilities for science and engineering.

Moreover, the partnership builds on an earlier agreement signed in 2024 between Argonne and RIKEN. Expanding the scope to include Fujitsu and NVIDIA, the collaboration will now focus on developing advanced computing infrastructure, designing and testing system software, and creating scientific applications that can address complex global challenges. Together, the organizations intend to push the boundaries of AI-enabled science and engineering.

“This collaboration represents a pivotal step forward in harnessing the transformative potential of AI and HPC to address pressing scientific challenges in energy, national security and fundamental research,” Laboratory Director Paul Kearns said. “Together we’re building a foundation for next-generation computing architectures and AI-driven scientific discovery that advances the Genesis Mission goals.”

As part of the agreement, the partners will actively engage in joint meetings, technical workshops, and broader community outreach. These activities are designed to encourage knowledge sharing and accelerate innovation across the global research ecosystem.

One major area of focus will be the design of future HPC and AI architectures. Specifically, the teams will prototype next-generation systems that tightly integrate modeling, simulation, and AI, enabling researchers to tackle increasingly complex scientific problems more efficiently. In parallel, the collaboration will work on developing fully integrated HPC platforms that combine hardware, software, and facility infrastructure into seamless, end-to-end systems.

In addition, the partners plan to establish a shared software ecosystem for AI-enabled science. By building an open and scalable software stack, they aim to support large-scale scientific research while ensuring flexibility and interoperability across platforms. Flagship AI-for-science applications will also demonstrate the real-world impact of these technologies and help shape future computing systems.

Furthermore, the collaboration will explore laboratory experiment automation using AI and robotics, streamlining experimental workflows and improving research productivity. At the same time, the teams will investigate how combining AI with quantum computing can accelerate the development of practical, large-scale quantum capabilities for scientific research.

Overall, this partnership underscores a shared commitment to advancing AI and HPC technologies that can transform scientific discovery, strengthen national capabilities, and drive innovation well into the future.
