Athena Security Unveils AI-Assisted X-Ray Platform for Schools

Athena Security Unveils A New AI-Assisted X-Ray Platform Designed Specially With Schools In Mind
🕧 6 min

Athena Security, a leader in AI-powered weapons detection and checkpoint screening technology, today announced a new generation of its patent-pending, vendor-agnostic, AI-assisted X-ray inspection platform for K-12 schools, and the launch of the A-Series, Athena’s first X-ray hardware of its own design.

The news comes at a critical time for school security after 235 incidents involving a gun were reported at K-12 schools in 2025 alone. Athena’s rollout to schools brings enterprise-grade screening and speed to the entrances where it matters most, offering a layer of protection for students and staff. Athena’s system has capacity to scan a throughput of 2,000 bags per hour. This efficiency is important for busy entrances like schools and hospitals and avoids burdensome security delays.

Rethinking the Checkpoint Itself

The A-Series weapons detection AI assisted X-ray line of products and corresponding technology platform eliminate the traditional operator console entirely. There is no legacy keyboard, fixed workstation, or screener chained to a console. Instead, operators easily review scans on an iPad gesture interface. In tight installations like hospital lobbies and some school entrances, removing the console frees up roughly three feet of floor space. Chris Ciabarra, CTO and co-founder of Athena Security, said that can be the difference between a workable checkpoint and none at all.

“This announcement signals a concerted effort by Athena to not only better address security screening and reduce delays, but to make it possible in spaces where it may not have been before,” Ciabarra said. “This furthers Athena’s commitment to providing safer spaces for people to work, learn, and socialize.”

Security Built for Government Standards

The tablet is a FIPS 140-3 hardware platform, which offers government-tested and approved assurance of handling sensitive data safely and securely. This meets the cryptographic standards that are required for government agencies themselves. Combined with an isolated, iPad-only deployment topology that minimizes network exposure and IT footprint, the system is designed from the ground up for environments where compliance is not optional.

Innovations covered by patent application

Several of the system’s key innovations are covered under Athena’s patent application, including:

  • Cross-Vendor Normalization — One AI weapons detection AI assisted baggage scanner X-ray system that works on top of any X-ray equipment-to detect threats like weapons and vapes from any manufacturer, protecting existing hardware investments.
  • Multimodal Fusion — Multiple data streams combined to improve detection accuracy and reduce false alarms.
  • Operator Presence Verification — The Weapons detection system operator unit confirms a trained operator is attending the screening — wherever they’re stationed.
  • Gesture-Driven Tablet Interface — Fast, intuitive scan review on iPad, replacing the legacy console and keyboard.
  • Automated Performance Verification — Continuous verification that detection performance meets standards, without manual testing.
  • Isolated iPad-Only Deployment — Minimal IT footprint and network exposure; critical for schools and hospitals with limited IT resources.
  • Signal Interposer Apparatus — Purpose-built hardware bridging legacy X-ray machines to the AI platform without modifying original equipment.
