Cohere took a large step forward in the global AI space with new partnerships with the governments of the United Kingdom and Canada. The purpose? To create secure and responsible AI capabilities to increase productivity in the public sector, safeguard national interests, and drive innovation.

With artificial intelligence changing the way governments function, Cohere is taking the lead in ensuring national security remains a vital component of efficiency. AI can improve everything from decision-making in defense to optimizing public service delivery- as long as it is done responsibly. Cohere is collaborating with governments to implement strong AI systems to ensure data protection, ethical use, and real world outcomes.

At a recent meeting, Cohere’s CEO Aidan Gomez discussed the potential of AI in securing economic growth and national sovereignty with Canada’s Mark Carney, and the Prime Minister of the UK, Keir Starmer. These partnerships are about more than technology, they are about leadership in AI on a global stage.

For the UK, a Memorandum of Understanding has been signed with the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology. The partnership aims to extend its focus on applying AI across industries such as finance, healthcare, and defense, while also seeking to elevate standards for AI safety using the UK’s AI Security Institute. Cohere is also committing itself to local talent to build its UK team by over 100 people along with research fellowships to increase the supply of AI expertise in the country.

In Canada, Cohere is deepening its already existing relationship with the federal government. This partnership hopes to reimagine government operations, as well as progress any shared research with the Canadian AI Safety Institute. In conjunction with the Institute, they will not only investigate the real-world risk of AI systems but also help to redesign models with a greater emphasis on security and transparency.

What makes Cohere also unique is that it has focused on a “secure AI frontier” approach, which emphasizes responsible scaling of technology in sensitive sectors. With their initiatives, not only will it improve operations, but it will help establish both Canada and the UK, as leaders in the ethical development of artificial intelligence.

With this type of approach, Cohere is demonstrating that responsible AI isn’t just an achievable technical goal, but shared global responsibility.
