Fujitsu announces that its innovative smart store monitoring solution is fully operational in METRO Inc’s 500 store in Canada. The solution based on Fujitsu’s patented Advanced operation and management (AO&M) solution, was implemented to trial in February 2025 and was gradually launched starting in April.

This AI-based store monitoring solution will provide metrics regarding use in real-time to address loss prevention, violation of store policy, and inefficiencies in the operations or process. It leverages multiple sources of data, including loyalty programs, video evidence, and point of sale systems, to link findings or anomalies together. Anything that used to take hours of review can now be flagged in seconds.

The rollout is covering all locations operating under the METRO, Food Basics, and Super C banners. METRO is now the first Canadian retailer to implement this tool, which is currently deployed in about 7,000–8,000 stores around the world. The solution is hosted in Canada, available in both French and English, and was built with German retailers.

“We are proud to partner with METRO in delivering a monitoring tool that can actually help Canada improve compliance and efficiency,” said Takashi Harada, Head of Smart Retail, for Fujitsu Limited. “This is gonna help streamline operations, and improve the customer experience.”

Early feedback from the 20 store pilot was very strong and the system identified losses right in the first week.  The system also helped identify misuse of a loyalty scheme without managers doing involved manual checks.  Store Managers and analysts are currently using the system also to bring visibility into the transaction lanes like never before.

Marc Lapointe, the Senior Director of Corporate Security Resilience at METRO, said, “It’s been super impactful already. Our analysts are working better with less guesswork, and store teams are excited to get demos. They’ve never had such a clear view before—it’s kind of transformative.”

The commercial side of the deployment is handled by Fujitsu North America, while the operational and technical support and development is done by Fujitsu Germany.

By integrating real-time artificial intelligence insights, Fujitsu’s latest deployment not only offers METRO added levels of security resilience but also sets a benchmark for smarter retail management in Canada and potentially beyond.
