UN Says Human Development Is Stalling—Can AI Save Us?
UNITED STATES 6TH MAY, 2025, – A new United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) report has expedited the raising of an urgent alarm concerning a slowdown in human development worldwide due to increasing inequalities and persisting economic crises.
The 2025 Human Development Report warns that if sluggish progress becomes normalized, the world may miss its 2030 goals by decades, leading to deepened insecurity and global instability.
“This deceleration signals a very real threat to global progress,” said Achim Steiner, UNDP Administrator.
“If 2024’s sluggish progress becomes ‘the new normal’, that 2030 milestone could slip by decades, making our world less secure, more divided, and more vulnerable to economic and ecological shocks.”
After waves of the pandemic, trade tensions, and burgeoning national debt over the years have left countries with fewer resources to invest in health, education, and social infrastructure.
With the gloom of the outlook under his belt, the report gives a glimmer of hope, stating that AI can transform lives for the better if employed responsibly.
A Global Survey by UNDP revealed that 60% of respondents feel that AI will have a positive impact on their work, and over 70% in developing countries said that it can increase productivity and improve access to essential services.
The report calls for a human-centered AI approach, including enhanced education and health systems, and enhanced governance cooperation.
“The choices we make in the coming years will define the legacy of this technological transition for human development,”
Said Pedro Conceição, Director of UNDP’s Human Development Report Office.
“With the right policies and focus on people, AI can be a crucial bridge to new knowledge, skills, and ideas that can empower everyone from farmers to small business owners.”
Regional disparities remain stark. While North America and Western Europe dominate global AI investment and innovation, Africa and Latin America struggle with infrastructure and access gaps. Trinidad & Tobago, among others, is betting on AI to accelerate development and close systemic divides.
Ultimately, the report frames AI not as a threat, but as a reflection of human intent: a powerful tool that could either deepen inequality or help overcome it.
