21 January, 2025,Tokyo, Japan –IBM Japan and KPMG Japan have recently announced the strategic alliance between the two companies to improve AI governance for business organizations in Japan.

It combines IBM’s AI technologies, specifically the IBM watsonx. govern framework, with “KPMG Trusted AI”, and is designed to assist companies with strong AI governance amid changing global regulatory frameworks.

This initiative as proposed comes in light at a time when regulatory pressures are mounting due to the European Union AI regulatory law due to take effect and Japan’s Strategy Council on AI drafting legislative frameworks.

Akio Yamaguchi, President, and CEO of IBM Japan said, “Our mission is to enhance innovation and ensure AI is safe, fair, and beneficial.”

The partnership relies on IBM’s experience in AI risk and governance that stems from its AI Ethics Committee established in 2018, and KPMG’s consulting services for AI regulatory compliance.

According to Co-chair of KPMG Japan, Hiroyuki Yamada

“the way we integrate IBM’s leadership solutions with our governance framework enables us to assure clients of the capacity to use AI confidently.”

The key features for this collaboration are to leverage the IBM watsonx.governance technology to enhance fairness, transparency, privacy, and robustness when building AI systems. This is a perfect match between the KPMG Trusted AI framework which incorporates Global guidelines and legislative trends to assist in risk management.

This deeper partnership is meant to help Japanese businesses grapple with the intricacies of AI governance and innovation simultaneously.

For Akio Yamaguchi, “Governance is not the limitation of AI but the guardrails to responsibly unleash its potential.”

This clearly draws attention to how businesses are looking for AI governance like never before. As more AI tools and technologies are adopted by companies, transformation becomes inevitable. We will continue developing tools and frameworks to support innovation and corporate compliance during the AI era at IBM Japan and KPMG Japan.
