SYDNEY, May 29, 2025 – The Ipswich City Council has embarked on a digital transformation of its HR and payroll infrastructure as part of a landmark project to provide smarter services. This strategic alliance makes Ipswich the first local government in Queensland to go live with Workday Human Capital Management, beginning a five-year journey of modernization.

Ipswich City Council is servicing a fast-growing population of more than 256,000 residents and $4.1 billion in infrastructure assets, driving innovation to encourage the efficiency, security, and responsiveness of its internal business processes. Having nearly 1,500 workers delivering essential services from waste management to community programs, the council’s investment in cutting-edge digital systems should be an ongoing process towards simplification and addressing growing public expectations.

“This transformation in payroll and HR processes will help drive better value for money, more integrated service delivery, and an improved customer experience. It is crucial that the council’s operations keep pace with community expectations and are fit for purpose to ensure we can continue to deliver services as efficiently as possible,” said Sonia Cooper, Chief Executive Officer at Ipswich City Council.

Cognizant will lead the deployment of Workday’s revolutionary HCM suite, thus providing Ipswich with a unified system for all employee-related processes. This will automate much of the manual data entry and errors by creating a single source of truth for payroll and HR operations. The council wants to gain sufficient time for employees by automating various core functions across the employee life cycle, thus working toward an improved employee experience.

“This exciting collaboration marks Workday Australia’s first local council customer in Queensland, Australia, and builds on the momentum of our public sector expertise globally,” said Jo-Anne Ruhl, Vice President and Managing Director of Workday Australia and New Zealand. Workday’s platform for people and money, with its inherent security and robust cloud infrastructure, is uniquely positioned to help empower local, state, and federal government organizations to drive enhanced citizen engagement.”

Apart from operational enhancements, Workday’s secure, cloud-based platform guarantees that the council has strong data security and regulatory compliance in place. The use of artificial intelligence and machine learning will enable the council to make quicker, better decisions and respond more rapidly to community demands.

“We are excited to collaborate with Ipswich City Council on this project, bringing Cognizant’s deep industry expertise and innovative technology. This collaboration highlights Cognizant’s strategic investment in our public sector team, reinforcing our commitment to delivering positive outcomes for the community.  Together with Workday, we aim to help Ipswich City Council leverage modern technology to digitalize and transform HR operations and enhance data security, enabling its workforce to better serve the people of Ipswich,” said Rob Marchiori, Country Manager of Cognizant Australia.

This project establishes a strong precedent for digital change in the public sector throughout Australia.
