LG Expands AI Semiconductor Innovation with New Automotive Micro Controller Unit
KOREA, 6th February 2025 – LG Electronics has created a high-performance Micro Controller Unit (MCU) for cars, and it’s getting a lot of attention worldwide. This MCU is super safe, reliable, and works really well. LG is already known for making special chips for smart TVs and AI home appliances, but now they’re stepping into the world of cars. They’re focusing on designing and developing AI semiconductors for vehicles, which is a big deal.
Recently, LG got a special certification called ISO 26262 from TÜV Rheinland, a famous German organization. This certification is all about safety in cars. It makes sure that the electrical and electronic systems in vehicles are super reliable and won’t fail, which can prevent accidents. LG had already received this certification for their semiconductor development process, and now their new MCU has also been recognized for its safety and performance.
This MCU is LG’s first self-developed automotive semiconductor. It’s designed for car infotainment systems, like controlling audio, video, and navigation. LG has all the skills needed to design, build, and test automotive semiconductors, and this certification proves they’re really good at it. They’re making sure their technology is safe and reliable, which is super important for cars.
LG is also preparing for the future. The car industry is moving towards software-defined vehicles (SDV), and LG wants to be ready. They’re working hard to improve their semiconductor technology to meet the needs of future cars, which are getting more advanced and complex.
Jin-gyeong Kim, head of LG’s SoC R&D Center, said
“LG’s vehicle components and solutions, autonomous driving technology and content services are recognized in the global market. We plan to enhance our competitiveness in the future mobility sector by strengthening our automotive semiconductor development process and design capabilities.”
LG is also growing in other areas of the car business, like infotainment, electric vehicle parts, and car lighting. They’re even expanding into services like Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) and a car content platform powered by webOS.
Earlier, LG got certifications for their work on autonomous vehicle components and car media systems, like ADAS, cameras, and infotainment displays. They’re really making a mark in the automotive world!
