Barcelona, Spain, 7th March 2025 – Huawei and MTN Group have both signed a memorandum of understanding which both companies will work together towards Africa’s digital future.

This agreement is targeted around improving the technological creativity and infrastructure of the entire continent.

The collaboration seeks to implement a Joint Innovation Technology Lab at the headquarters of MTN in South Africa. This lab will function as a joint innovation hub to fast-track the development and deployment of digital Africa solutions. Areas of interest include 5G, artificial intelligence, big data, cloud computing, and digital banking and financial services.

Mazen Mroué, MTN Group Chief Technology and Information officer said it best when quoted,

“The Joint Innovation Technology Lab is more than a partnership between two companies, it’s a commitment towards building Africa’s digital ecosystem. Huawei will continue innovating with MTN so that they are equipped to best serve the unique African market. We will make sure of that,”

Said Li Peng, the Corporate Senior Vice President and President of ICT Sales & Service Division at Huawei.

This partnership stems from previous ones aimed at closing the digital divide as well as achieving sustainable developmental goals in Africa.

MTN joined hands with Huawei in 2023 to better digital and connectivity skills through rural outreach via the Huawei DigiTruck project and RuralStar, an inexpensive satellite internet solution for rural areas.

The current MoU marks yet another commitment to transforming the continent by advanced technologies.

With the help of Huawei, MTN is tackling issues like low network coverage in rural areas, energy efficiency, and cost of services through their service innovation and infrastructure development.

As the digital ecosystem of Africa matures, partnerships of this nature are important to ensure that advancements in technology benefit its people and that the gains are not merely theoretical.

Creating the Joint Innovation Technology Lab is a move in the right direction towards digitally integrated and empowered Africa.
