Olympus Introduces AI Surgical Planning System for Precise Procedures

Center Valley, Pennsylvania, 13th March 2025 – Olympus Corporation, a global leader in medical technology, has taken a major step forward in healthcare innovation by launching its first AI-powered clinical decision tool. This breakthrough was achieved through a strategic partnership with Ziosoft, a software firm specializing in advanced imaging analytics and machine learning.

The new tool is designed to transform surgical planning by integrating artificial intelligence, enabling surgeons to better prepare for complex procedures. Darryl Rock, Vice President of Surgical Solutions at Olympus, shared his excitement about the collaboration: “Olympus has a proud legacy in medical technology, particularly as a pioneer in endoscopy. We are excited to partner with Ziosoft, which has its own long history of developing AI software to help physicians make more accurate diagnostic and treatment decisions during procedures.

The tool focuses on three key areas of surgery—thoracic, liver, and urologic procedures:

  • Thoracic Surgery: Converts 2D CT/MRI scans into realistic 3D models to aid in lung cancer and thoracic procedure planning. This reduces the need for invasive approaches.

  • Liver Surgery: Provides surgeons with detailed visualizations of liver anatomy, helping them plan liver-sparing surgeries and improve patient recovery.

  • Urologic Surgery: Assists in minimally invasive kidney surgeries by accurately assessing tumors and abnormalities.

This innovation allows static images from CT scans and MRIs to be transformed into dynamic 3D models in real time. The goal is to help surgeons make better decisions, preserve healthy tissue, and improve surgical outcomes. Additionally, the tool serves as an educational resource for surgical trainees by guiding them through unfamiliar procedures.

Olympus plans to showcase this technology at the Society of Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES) meeting from March 12–15 in Long Beach, California. The company will also highlight other innovations like its Intelligent Endoscopy Ecosystem and CADDIE™ AI System for real-time polyp detection during colonoscopies.

This launch marks the beginning of Olympus’ journey toward integrating AI into healthcare workflows. With tools like these, the company aims to make surgeries safer, more efficient, and consistently successful—a vision aptly described as “Seeing the Invisible.
