Super Bowl LIX Gets AI Broadcast Makeover
NEW ORLEANS LOUISIANA, 30th January 2025 – Sony, one of the technology sponsors of the NFL, will change the way Super Bowl LIX is covered by implementing more AI technology in its broadcast and production systems.
More than 240 Sony cameras with AI capabilities will be used all over the Caesars Superdome for every play, replay, interview, and celebration.
The AUGMD owner Michael Davies who is the EVP of Field Operations for FOX explained saying,
“The Super Bowl is not just the biggest game of the year; it is also the Super Bowl of production. Our job is to tell the tale of the game, the action inside the stadium and the energy of billions of people watching, and for that, we will use Sony’s AI technology.”
The AI cameras will be placed at the two end zones, along with the sides of the field. It will also be positioned in different parts of the stadium, in addition to SkyCam that covers the field. Furthermore, 14 Sony cameras will additionally focus on content for streaming.
Gary Brantley, the NFL’s Chief Information Officer emphasized the significance of this technology by stating,
”The Super Bowl is the most viewed event every year, and providing an authentic experience to coaches, players, and fans is only possible because of the advanced technologies we have incorporated. Sony has helped take the experience on the grand day to the next level, and we at the NFL are excited to have Sony as an integral part of Super Bowl LIX in New Orleans.”
Aside from the broadcasting alone, Sony’s Hawk-Eye technology will be used for support during the in-game officiating and the review processes to ensure that all decisions made are correct and conclusive.
In terms of photography, Sony’s AI-powered Alpha™ cameras and lenses will be used by the Associated Press and the NFL’s internal photography department called NFL Focus to capture and disseminate images in real time.
