MADRID, SPAIN 31st January 2025 – – Telefónica Tech and IBM have entered into a new collaboration agreement to advance cybersecurity via quantum-safe technology. Announced on January 30, 2025, this joint effort seeks to address tomorrow’s quantum computers’ ability to jeopardize the realm of traditional encryption.

Quantum computing, when fully developed, offers endless possibilities and hazards. It can carry out complex calculations at incredible speeds, and with this capability also comes the threat of violating present-day data security protocols.

Cybercrimes can exploit this risk by accumulating data today for future decryption once quantum computing is a reality. Aware of this risk, Telefónica Tech will integrate IBM’s advanced quantum-safe technology into its cyber security services, thereby creating specific use cases that address these emerging threats.

Efforts on the contract will see the installation of IBM’s quantum-safe infrastructure at the headquarters of Telefónica Tech in Madrid. Included within this quantum-safe infrastructure are the IBM LinuxONE system and advanced key protection tools and storage technologies. Organizations using the IBM Guardium Quantum Safe suite will have greater visibility and management of their cryptographic controls, thereby positioning them to respond effectively to vulnerabilities.

IBM has been leading in developing quantum-safe solutions, including IBM Guardium Key Lifecycle Manager, which supports secure encryption key management, and tools such as Quantum Safe Explorer and Quantum Safe Remediator to identify cryptographic weaknesses in the code.

These resources aim to assist organizations in transitioning to new cryptographic standards outlined by the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), crucial in protecting sensitive data against threats emanating from quantum computing in the future.

Raquel Ruiz Lozano, Global Head of Strategic Partnerships for Telefónica Tech said,

“Quantum computing offers incredible opportunities, but it could also pose a significant challenge in terms of cybersecurity. This collaboration agreement with IBM allows us to continue to help address the potential risks of the post-quantum world, thanks to its IBM’s quantum safe technology, and to offer our clients solutions to help protect their critical data and face this transformation with security and confidence.”

Adolfo Hernández Pulido, Technology Managing Director for Telefónica, IBM went on to say that

“It is critical for organizations to begin evaluating their cryptography and planning a transition to quantum-safe standards. At IBM, we are proud not only to have had a hand in the development of new post-quantum cryptography algorithms, but also to be leading the way with new quantum-safe technologies and services. We are thrilled to sign this collaboration agreement with Telefónica Tech focused on quantum safe technology.”

The partnership also lays down plans for a joint use-case office that will emphasize key themes like communications encryption and new secure algorithm adaptation. The partnership creates the possibility of joint companies stepping into leadership for the global arena of cybersecurity as the need to deal with the post-quantum world will grow.
