Trump Delays TikTok Ban, Suggests U.S. Stake in App
January 20, 2025, Washington DC-President Donald Trump has issued an executive order which allows TikTok to continue operating within America. The order prolongs the ban on TikTok to 75 days in the future.
This gives TikTok’s parent organization, ByteDance, the required time to reach out with stakeholders across the United States. This timeline gives the parties involved time to settle before immediate shutdown is faced by TikTok. Plans were formed previously where Trump would ban TikTok in America unless the Chinese owners sold off all of the operations in the country. This emerged from worries over national security in America.
In contrast, Trump suggested an alternate lifetime solution: that the US government buys 50% share in the platform and uses it to secure data in the country while concurrently making profits through the venture. While speaking to the press, he served a pertinent question stating,
“If we create that value, why aren’t we entitled to like half?”
Such statements indicate towards developing softly towards the hundred of billion dollar worth app.
While ByteDance did not specify any firm commitments to the order yet, the legitimacy of the extension remains uncertain. Frank Pallone deemed the provisional order as
‘a circumvention of bipartisan legislation designed to protect national security.‘
The relationship between China and the US remains tenuous as TikTok remains a sticking issue. On the one hand, China’s Foreign Ministry seems to be okay with a deal while on the other, they also stated that operational moves should be taken by the businesses themselves.
For now, important app stores like Google and Apple do not host TikTok and the app’s presence remains unstable.
Additionally, the order commands the Justice Department to draft such letters so that companies like Alphabet, Oracle, and Apple are assured that if they had any legal issues with TikTok in the past, they would not have to answer to it. This aims to restore the trust of firms amidst the ongoing negotiations.
This is a big change to Trump’s previous attitude towards TikTok. In 2020, when he failed to place a ban on the app, he accredited it as a source of engaging the youth during elections. He also influenced the younger voters which also worked on his favor during the elections. Earlier there was a plan to merge Walmart and Oracle with TikTok to run their operations in America, but those ideas collapsed.
Trump’s plans are unprecedented and his claim of investment equity could mean a shift in the way foreign owned tech firms are looked after, however the results of this will possibly set international relations for the US and China.
