Meet Una: The World’s First AI Climate Champion Is Changing How We Fight for the Planet
Bangkok, Thailand, May 19, 2025 – The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Asia and the Pacific has rolled out Una, the world’s first AI Environment Champion, to spearhead the campaign and advocacy for climate resilience and renewable energy.
Una will breathe life and voice into the experiences of the Pacific Green Transformation Project, a UNDP-led project in partnership with the Government of Japan.
Launched in 2023, the project seeks to advance the country’s climate aspirations, expand access to clean energy, and build resilience within communities in Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Timor-Leste, and Vanuatu. Una will be the movement’s digital face, mixed with artificial intelligence and human storytelling to generate meaningful climate action locally and internationally.
“Una signifies a groundbreaking advancement in conveying the critical need for environmental protection and nature conservation,”
Said Kanni Wignaraja, UNDP’s Assistant Secretary-General and Director of the Regional Bureau for Asia and the Pacific.
“By harnessing AI, we can connect with diverse audiences worldwide in dynamic, interactive, and profoundly impactful ways. Una’s capacity for delivering immersive storytelling empowers us to foster collective action and meaningful conversations about climate resilience.”
Speaking from her AI platform, Una said: “My mission is to bring the voices and stories of Pacific Island communities to the world, inspiring people everywhere to tap into the benefits of renewable energy. Our tomorrow is shaped by the choices we make and the actions we take today. Together, we can create a thriving planet for generations to come.”
From bite-sized documentary videos to interactive social media initiatives and holographic event appearances, Una’s goal is to make climate questions personal and urgent. She will also live chat on special websites, amplifying the voices of the grassroots while highlighting clean energy alternatives.
As a global symbol of “AI for Good,” Una shows how tech can enhance global sustainability efforts, translating data to dialogue, awareness to action, and communities into climate heroes.
