Angola, Central Africa, 7th March 2025 – Angola’s largest telecom operator, Unitel, has teamed up with Ericsson to modernize the network and introduce world-class 5G capabilities to Angola. This partnership represents a huge milestone in Angola’s digital revolution, boosting connectivity and driving economic development.

Ericsson upgraded Unitel’s core network using advanced solutions like its dual-mode 5G Core, IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS), and Cloud Native Infrastructure. All these solutions enable Unitel to have 4G and 5G together on one single platform with better speeds, lesser latency, and improved voice as well as data services. Even the companies conducted a successful trial of a 5G Standalone (SA) data call, which gave an insight into the potential that this future-ready technology has to offer.

Júlio Gonçalves, Unitel’s Director of Core and Services, emphasized the significance of this collaboration, “Our partnership with Ericsson is a game-changer for Angola’s telecommunications landscape. It enables us to provide our customers with a world-class network experience that will drive socio-economic growth and development across Angola. With Ericsson’s cutting-edge solutions and technology, we are confident in our ability to elevate customer experiences.”

The modernization process features advanced capabilities such as network slicing and edge computing, enabling Unitel to provide customized services for industries like healthcare, education, and finance. IMS integration also enhances rich real-time communication services across networks.

Ericsson’s Thunderbolt 5 technology also provides quicker data speeds to Unitel’s network. This enhancement will be of benefit to consumers and enterprises alike as it will allow high-speed applications such as Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) and Enhanced Mobile Broadband (eMBB). These innovations will deliver more stable and omnipresent internet coverage in Angola.

Majda Lahlou Kassi, Vice President Ericsson West & Southern Africa, emphasized the greater importance, “We are committed to enabling a fully connected Angola through the power of 5G, driving innovation and accelerating the country’s digital economy. Our advanced solutions will help UNITEL provide enhanced customer experiences and networks tailored to the increasing demand for smart devices and data usage. This collaboration brings innovative technology to the country and creates new opportunities for businesses and individuals to thrive.”
