DeepSeek AI Ban: Caught Sending American Data to China?
WASHINGTON D.C., USA, 6th February 2025 – IT is reported that representatives have introduced a bipartisan solution aimed at restricting the use of DeepSeek on government issued devices fearing that it would lead to data sharing with the Chinese government.
Darin LaHood and Josh Gottheimer, the sponsors of the bill, have aggressively opposed TikTok claiming it posed a similar threat to America’s security.
A Chinese AI company, DeepSeek became one of the most rising names due to the release of their models which they marketed as open-source. However, investigations expose concealed scripts in the application capable of sending user information to China Mobile, a state-owned telecommunications firm.
In a statement, Ivan Tsarynny, CEO of Feroot Security, said, “DeepSeek is doing exactly what it is supposed to do, collecting everything it can from American users and sending all of their private data back to China.”
Some countries, such as Australia, South Korea and Italy have taken immediate action to ban the application from their government systems after uncovering these findings.
Some US federal bodies like US Navy and NASA have also limited the scope of Deep Seek. Regarding this issue,
Mr. Gottheimer pointed out, “It’s a no-brainer in the steps we need to take to stop our foe from accessing confidential information through our government.”
The aim of the proposed legislation is to make sure that neither sensitive data from personal accounts nor information regarding government activities are leaked to the Chinese Communist Party.
Representative LaHood stated,
“We cannot, in any case, allow a CCP company to gain access to delicate government or personal information.”
With advancements, the bill shows increased worry about the effect of foreign interference on data security and technology used in governmental functions.
