Security operations centers are built for pressure. Alerts surge, analysts investigate, and teams decide what matters before determining what to do next. That rhythm has defined the SOC for decades. What’s not changing is the volume of work and the pace at which it arrives—both have grown steadily since the SOC’s inception. What is changing is that human resources are no longer scaling with them, and organizations are increasingly recognizing they shouldn’t have to.
Investigations now span identity systems, cloud services, collaboration platforms, and endpoints simultaneously. Attackers increasingly rely on automation to move faster and with greater precision. Traditional workflows are beginning to show their limits. At the same time, expectations keep growing teams are asked to investigate more quickly and with greater accuracy, often without additional resources. AI agents are emerging precisely at this inflection point, offering a new way to perform investigations and manage workload. This isn’t incremental improvement. It represents a fundamental shift from manual workflow execution toward continuous, machine-assisted inquiry.
Why this shift is happening now
Several forces are compressing the timeline for change. Attacker automation is not new. From the Morris worm in 1988 to CodeRed and Blaster in the early 2000s, adversaries have consistently outpaced defenders on automation. What AI introduces is something categorically different: automation married with machine intelligence, where LLMs replace hard-coded scripts with reasoning, flexible toolchain generation, and the ability to adapt on the fly. That shift changes the calculus entirely. Because the SOC sits at the first point of contact for this activity, response cadence becomes central to containment.

Large language models also align naturally with the daily work analysts perform. Much of that work involves extracting data, correlating activity across systems, and summarizing findings. When done manually, investigation depth depends heavily on available time and analyst experience. Machine-assisted analysis enables that same work to be performed consistently and at a scale that would otherwise be impractical.
The market is evolving quickly as well. Building basic capabilities on top of large language models is relatively straightforward, which lowers barriers to entry and accelerates competition. Delivering reliable investigations at enterprise scale is far more complex. This compression is pushing the industry toward what I’d describe as tier-one compression—where performing investigations on behalf of a tier-one analyst becomes a baseline expectation, not a differentiator. The implications extend beyond triage. AI agents can meaningfully support investigations, hunting, and cross-environment analysis, areas where time constraints and fragmented data have historically limited depth.
Principles that must guide AI in the SOC
Before discussing use cases, it’s worth defining the principles that determine whether AI agents can function as trusted members of a security operations team.
Accuracy is the threshold requirement. Investigations performed by an agent must meet or exceed the quality an analyst could achieve manually—reliably, every time. If results vary or confidence is uncertain, trust erodes quickly. Agents must also operate within defined governance boundaries. Security operations demand transparency and accountability. Analysts and leadership need to understand what the system examined, how conclusions were reached, and how investigative logic can be refined over time. Without auditability and control, adoption stalls regardless of technical capability.
Speed and affordability matter too. Capabilities that can’t deliver timely value or operate within realistic cost structures create friction rather than relief. Systems earn confidence by producing reliable results quickly and predictably. These principles determine whether AI integrates into the SOC as a dependable extension of the team, or remains an opaque automation layer that analysts don’t trust.
Where AI agents are delivering value today
Security operations remain event driven. Alerts arrive and require interpretation. The challenge isn’t only determining whether an alert is accurate—it’s understanding its significance within a broader environment.
AI agents can ingest an alert and build an investigative narrative that extends well beyond the originating system, correlating activity across identity providers, cloud platforms, collaboration environments, and endpoints. The focus shifts from validating the alert to understanding what the activity actually means in context and whether action is required. That broader narrative reduces investigation time and ensures findings remain intact as cases move through escalation paths.

Not every investigation begins with an alert. Insider risk scenarios, threat intelligence leads, and compliance reviews often require analysts to work without predefined playbooks. In these situations, machine assistance can handle data gathering, relationship mapping, and timeline construction while analysts focus on interpretation and decision-making. The goal is removing the manual friction that slows judgment.
Threat hunting presents another opportunity. Advanced hunting has historically been limited to specialists fluent in complex query languages. Functional hunting allows analysts to express investigative intent directly while the platform executes the underlying queries—broadening participation and scaling hunting capabilities across the team.
Transparency is non-negotiable
For AI agents to function effectively in the SOC, their work must be transparent. Investigations should include the evidence considered, the questions asked, and the reasoning behind conclusions. Analysts must be able to review the investigative path, extend it when necessary, and refine future investigations based on new insights. This transparency supports governance and audit requirements. It also ensures analysts can stand behind the conclusions reached—which remains a core responsibility in any investigation.
As machine assistance assumes responsibility for data extraction and correlation, analyst roles naturally shift toward interpretation, prioritization, and decision-making. Less time assembling evidence. More time understanding adversary behavior and assessing operational impact. This evolution doesn’t diminish human expertise—it directs that expertise where it provides the greatest value.
Organizations that integrate AI agents thoughtfully, guided by accuracy, governance, and transparency, will strengthen their ability to respond effectively. Those that delay will face growing investigative backlogs and mounting pressure on already-stretched teams. Reimagining the SOC is no longer optional.
