KUALA LUMPUR, 17th February , 2025 — On this day, the Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) will be hosting the 54th Executive Board Meeting (EBM) of the Organization of Asia-Pacific News Agencies (OANA) with the theme of leveraging artificial intelligence to traverse the changing media landscape.
Bernama Chief Executive Officer Datin Paduka Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin highlighted that with the rising importance of new technologies in recent times,
“Members of the Organization of Asia-Pacific News Agencies (OANA) can leverage new technologies, particularly artificial intelligence, to stay ahead in an evolving media landscape.”
The meeting is an important platform since it will have the OANA Secretary General Zaman Rezakhani, and representatives from 13 other international news agencies, to discuss challenges posed by fast-paced technological advances, changing audience behaviors, and the omnipresent threat of misinformation.
Nur-ul Afida pointed out that all these are responsibilities to be shouldered by media personnel, asserting,
“As media professionals, we share a responsibility to uphold the values of freedom of expression, ethical reporting, and equitable news dissemination.”
Important themes surrounding the 54th OANA EBM include efforts to create a digital-first, audience-centred approach and to counter disinformation and misinformation. She went on to mention the work done by Bernama,
“Bernama established an independent fact-checking initiative, MyCheck Malaysia, in March 2020.”
The initiative which is compliant with the International Fact-checking Network (IFCN) code looks into issues affecting societal harmony, safety, daily life, and economic well-being.
The meeting comes at a time when Malaysia is chairing ASEAN under the theme of inclusivity and sustainability. In a statement, Nur-ul Afida assured that
“Bernama will provide comprehensive coverage of these ASEAN meetings and will share the news on the OANA channel for the benefit of our members.”
Established in 1961, OANA now stands for 41 member agencies from 33 countries that disperse two-thirds of the world’s information. Sharing on Bernama’s part, Nur-ul Afida commented,
“Bernama was proud to have been part of this journey for over 20 years.”
The gathering reinforces the collective commitment of the OANA members to uphold journalistic integrity and adjust themselves to the rapid transformations of media in the environment.
