Ericsson, Dell, and Red Hat Drive Open RAN Forward with O2 Interface Advancements
18 February 2025 – Ericsson, Dell Technologies, and Red Hat have taken giant leaps towards Open RAN innovation by industrializing the O2 interface, which is vital in achieving multi-vendor telecom networks for seamless interconnectivity.
Being amongst the first few companies to contribute towards the O-RAN Alliance, the partners are validating O2 interface implementations through proofs of concept for enhanced cloud RAN management and automation.
The O2 Interface takes center stage in Open RAN Infrastructure, providing standard management and deployment services for open multi-clouds to enable cloud-native RANs for efficient deployment and operation across its various vendors.
The O2 Infrastructure Management Service looks after the hardware, software, and cloud resources over distributed sites and automated lifecycle management, and the O2 Deployment Management Service-DMS-authorizing deployment and operation of Open RAN functions across multi-vendor cloud platforms.
In being coupled together through Ericsson’s Intelligent Automation Platform (EIAP), Dell’s Telecom Infrastructure Blocks and Automation Suite, and Red Hat OpenShift, the service delivery components facilitate inter-working and network automation integrated smoothly together.
Anders Vestergren, Head of Solution Area Network Management, at Ericsson, says, “The future of telecom networks lies in openness and interoperability. The O2 interface, as set out by the O-RAN Alliance, is a vital element for empowering CSPs with the flexibility that they need to deliver the multi-vendor, open, innovative, and programmable networks they have planned.
Ericsson already has a strong collaboration with Red Hat and Dell in this particular area and looks forward to working with others to further drive industry adoption.”
Andrew Vaz, Vice President, Product Management, Telecom Systems Business at Dell Technologies commented,
“Dell PowerEdge XR8000 servers and Dell Telecom Infrastructure Automation Software, combined with Ericsson and Red Hat technologies, will offer communications service providers simpler and more efficient ways to manage cloud RAN networks, all aligned with O-RAN specifications.”
At Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2025 in Barcelona from March 3-6, Ericsson, Dell, and Red Hat will showcase their advancements at their respective booths.
Live demonstrations will illustrate how the O2 interface enhances Open RAN’s interoperability and scalability, reinforcing its role in the future of telecom infrastructure.
