An improved AI model won’t get to a point where it can make effective business decisions if it doesn’t have the required data to understand the circumstances. It may have an adequate question comprehension or the ability to analyze possible answers, but it still can provide a wrong conclusion due to incomplete data, outdated information, or some lack of necessary business context.
This is becoming more and more of a problem because organizations need to evolve from using generative AI assistants to AI systems that can access internal databases, API services, and conduct complex workflows. For such systems, the main challenge is not only to supply data but to make necessary information with required meaning and authorization available at the right time.
That difference is essential in the context of long-term artificial general intelligence (AGI) development. Even though AGI is still a research task, the necessary data infrastructure needed for the development of increasingly advanced AI is already important to enterprises.
Why Data Alone Is Not Enough
Enterprise information can be found in various locations including databases, documents, customer relationship management systems, emails, operational applications and internal knowledge databases. However, different data sources can sometimes describe the same business entity in a different way, as well as have various update schedules or inconsistent definitions.
Sometimes it happens that a model retrieves a sales number without having even a faint idea of whether it represents booked revenue, recognized revenue or a forecast. It can summarize a policy without capturing a new version of it later. In both cases it can be said that the data is technically accurate, but does not suit the current decision.
This matter poses a significant threat when AI agents can execute actions based on their findings as well.
TDWI focuses on AI data foundation and context engineering in its research on AI governance trends in 2026. The point is quite practical and concerns the need for accurate data and proper understanding of its meaning by AI systems.
In our paper on modern data architecture in 2026 we not only look into this problem but also explore the whole infrastructure, which is necessary for effective use of enterprise data by AI systems.
What Is Context Engineering?
The term context engineering encompasses the process of selecting and coordinating all necessary information in a way that an AI system will be able to achieve specific goals. This may entail finding the appropriate documents, implementing business rules, keeping task history, understanding a user’s access rights, etc.
Discrete context engineering should not just be seen as an additional amount of data supplied to the model. A big pile of documents could contain the answer, still, the model needs to know the relevant extracts of and correlations between documents as well as rules regulating their application.
For instance, when an AI agent is investigating a delayed shipment, it has to know its current order status, supplier commitments, inventory information, delivery policies, and the history of conversations with customers. It needs to know which source is considered to be the right one if different systems provide conflicting information.
The Building Blocks of an AI-Ready Data Foundation
To prepare the data sets for powerful enough AI, there are a number of interrelated requirements.
1. Good quality and well organized data
The data quality relies on elements such as completeness, correctness, consistency and timeliness. An organisation should have clarity of ownership, known sources of information and metadata about the data.
2. Common understanding of business concepts
To allow AI machines to interpret the information consistently, it is necessary to use semantic models, business glossaries and dictionary for a particular field. For example, the term “active customer” should not mean different things in sales reports and financial statements unless the difference is defined.
3. Retrieval from both organized and disorganized information
Knowledge in enterprises is presented in both systematic forms such as dashboards, as well as in other formats such as manuals and records. All of the mentioned systems such as searching or retrieving programs plus the use of metadata physically work to deliver the results but their performance is dependent on the quality of the source of information, accuracy of search and adequacy of control systems.
4. Context representing present-day events
Certain actions depend on the balance available in stock, total number of transactions performed recently or rules in effect currently. To achieve that AI programs ought to be connected to related operating systems or have the access to the fresh information updating their knowledge rather than having an access to only the old information produced several months ago.
5. Protection and management
The AI software should not collect any information because it exists in the enterprise and the identity of the source, roles of relevant users and the information classification are important for determining what information can be accessed and how.
Why Agentic AI Raises the Stakes
There are some instances of traditional chatbots responding wrongly. A solution that is tied into the enterprise application would be able to utilize this wrong response in its dealings with enterprise records, be it an entry in the records or another activity in its workflows.
Most recently, Google Cloud published a report in 2026 regarding the principles of AI infrastructure and the usage of the Agentic Data Cloud, explaining that the enterprise context is still being fragmented, which causes infrastructure issues and the problems associated with the legacy of the systems used. The report states that 83% of organizations surveyed for this research believe improvements in the infrastructure are needed in order to introduce production grade agentic AI.
The reports have an engineering challenge behind them, as the agents seem to need more things than merely access to models. They have to be connected to business processes and reliable systems for ensuring quality and efficiency of their work.
The article about AGI and agentic AI examines how agentic AI has transitioned from merely providing the feedback to being able to perform the required actions.
Does Better Data Bring Enterprises Closer to AGI?
Reliable data and context improve AI systems, but they do not present general intelligence. AGI must be capable of performing multiple tasks in unknown situations, which has not yet been established by scientists through an agreed test or framework.
Data infrastructure should be perceived as an enabling element that lets AI systems access valuable information, employ business rules and operate in reality. It does not, however, provide solutions to reasoning, learning and generalization issues.
As it was previously discussed in one of our articles, the systems will not be able to demonstrate broad intelligence unless several different capabilities function properly and correctly.

What Enterprises Should Prioritise Now
Organizations do not have to reconfigure their entire data estate prior to the use of AI. Rather, it is advisable to choose a valuable workflow and find out which data is needed.
Initially, the workflow-related sources should be mapped, their ownership established, and discrepancies resolved. Next, the procedures for data retrieval and access should be determined, it should be checked, whether appropriate context is received by the system, and the results calculated based on the practical experience of the company. If the process includes agents who can make transactions or change data, transaction-level permissions should be granted and the monitoring of the process set in place.
Conclusion
The base of enterprise AGI won’t be solely grounded in model capability. Rather, data quality, business context, governance, retrieval and integration will all help dictate how well evolving AI technologies will function within a business.
AGI, meanwhile, is a long-term aspiration for the research world, however companies already have a clear motivation to sort out these foundations: AI is already taking over jobs that rely heavily on correct information and sound decisions. Companies that create reliable and well-governed data systems will be in a stronger position to benefit from the new wave of AI regardless of its form.
